Area of impact: Leaf
Description: First symptoms are tiny yellow flecks on the upper side of leaves. These later turn into reddish-brown pustules. Growth and seed filling will slow, and rust infections can make the plant more susceptible to other diseases.
Pathogen involved: Puccinia recondita (a fungus)
Timing/Conditions: Warm humid conditions favor rust development. Rust infections are most detrimental before or during flowering.
Contributing factors: This disease is found wherever temperate cereals are grown.
Management practices: Plant resistant varieties and early maturing cultivars. Avoid planting dense stands so air can circulate and light can penetrate the canopy. Destroy alternate hosts.
