New Bionematicide Protects Produce, Row Crops

Nematodes cause about $80 billion annually in global crop damages, which addes up to serious dollars stolen from farmers’ pockets. Marrone Bio Innovations hopes to help put some of that money back in your pocket with their new bionematicide Majestene.

Approved for use in 2015, Majestene can be applied to a wide array of crops including corn, soybeans, cotton and a large number of produce fruits and veggies. The product is said to protect crops from root knot, cyst, sting and lance nematodes by preventing eggs from hatching, preventing root galling and decreasing population density.

The product is a bacteria based (non-living) active ingredient with nematicidal activity against nematodes in all stages, eggs, juveniles and adult. Majestine can be used stand alone or with conventional products, in a tank mix or in rotation.

Majestine is currently registered in 13 states including Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin. The product has a minimum four hour re-entry interval for farmworkers and is nontoxic to fish, birds and most beneficial insects.
